Mahabharata Epic, Ancient India Tale of Bharata Dynasty

The Mahabharata is one of the two great Sanskrit epic poems of ancient India and is regarded by Hindus as both a text about dharma (Hindu moral law) and a history (itihasa). Consisting of almost 100,000 couplets, about seven times the length of the Iliad and the Odyssey combined, this epic is divided into 18 parvans (sections), plus a supplement.

The epic narrates the events and aftermath of the Kurukshetra War, a war of succession between two groups of princely cousins, the Kauravas and the Pāṇḍavas. The Mahābhārata was one of the two most important factors that created the "Hindu" culture of India and still exerts tremendous cultural influence throughout India and Southeast Asia.

Among the principal works within the Mahābhārata are the Bhagavad Gita, the story of Damayanti, Shakuntala, Savitri and Satyavan, and many others often considered as works in their own right. The epic was deemed greater than all the four Vedas combined because of its spiritual value and content—knowledge that can destroy sin and grant its listeners a place in the higher heavens or even salvation.

Dharma is the central theme of the Mahabharata, the destiny and responsibility of an individual. The conflict between living in accordance with dharma versus failing one's dharma drives this story as a parable about man's fundamental choices. The epic presents a holistic view of life, encompassing social, moral and spiritual dimensions, offering practical examples of how to live a balanced and spiritual life.
