Antique Buddha Statue - 13" Tall Nepal Art Collector Piece

In the early Pali texts such as the Ariyapariyesana Sutta, the future Buddha speaks of his life before awakening. He explains that while still a bodhisattva, he searched for freedom from birth, aging, sickness, and death, even though he himself was still subject to them. This shows the deep human journey of seeking truth while still living in the same fragile world as everyone else.

The historical Buddha, Gautama Buddha, described his own path in this way before enlightenment. In the Pali canon, Maitreya is mentioned as the next fully awakened Buddha who will appear in the distant future, after the teachings of the present Buddha have faded.

In later Theravada tradition, the word bodhisatta is used more widely for one who is on the path toward awakening. Commentarial literature speaks of different types of bodhisattas, including those who aim to become a fully awakened Buddha, a solitary Buddha, or an enlightened disciple. Some Theravada teachers explain that the bodhisattva path was not commonly taught as a general path for all, but was understood as a rare and great aspiration.

At its heart, a Bodhisattva represents compassion in action. It is the vow to seek awakening not only for oneself, but for the benefit of all beings.

Gold Painted Face
The face of this Bodhisattva statue is carefully painted with gold to highlight the sacred expression, especially the eyes and lips. Fine metal carving gives form, but the gold painting brings warmth, depth, and living presence to the features.

In Buddhist tradition, painting the face is not only decorative. It is part of a sacred process that prepares the statue for consecration and devotional practice. The gold symbolizes purity, wisdom, and enlightened qualities. When artisans apply gold to the face, it reflects devotion and mindful craftsmanship. Every brushstroke is done with care, honoring the spiritual meaning of the image.
